Aviva Stadium launches Eco-Friendly Fan Cup
Dublin’s 51,000-capacity Aviva Stadium, home to the FAI and IRFU, and a UEFA EURO 2020 host venue, has launched an Eco-Friendly Fan Cup initiative ahead of its hosting of Guinness 6 Nations games.

At Aviva Stadium, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment in all our processes. As part of this ongoing commitment, we are delighted to announce that from 1st February 2020, our reusable Eco-Friendly Fan Cup will be available at all the upcoming Guinness 6 Nations matches.
In partnership with Diageo, Aviva Stadium conducted several trials at the Guinness Summer Series matches, which were well received by patrons.
The process is simple:
- When fans’ purchase their first pint, they will be charged a deposit of €1.00
- For their next pint, they can approach the bar as normal, hand back their used pint cup and be provided a new pint cup at no extra cost
- Only when fans’ return their final used cup – without wanting to purchase any further pints – will they then be redeemed the €1.00 deposit paid at first purchase
- When returning their final cup, fans can do so at a number of bars and return points which will be clearly signposted throughout the venue
- Alternatively, should fans wish to keep their cups, they can take them home as a souvenir of their day at Aviva Stadium
Aviva Stadium is certified to ISO20121 and operates as a sustainable venue. In taking a sustainable approach in operating the venue, Aviva Stadium works on managing its impact under the three pillars of sustainability:
- Economic Impact
- Environmental Impact
- Social Impact
The stadium also refers to this as the 3 P’s – Profit, Planet, People – although some organisations or people would sooner relate to this as being Green, Eco-Friendly or showing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Sustainability is defined as “An enduring balanced approach to economic activity, environmental responsibility and social progress”. This means that in planning and undertaking the operation of the stadium, the management works to maximise positive impacts and minimise negative impacts.

Martin Murphy, Stadium Director/CEO at Aviva Stadium was one of some 50+ expert speakers that shared insights during the 2019 edition of ALSD International, Europe’s one and only event dedicated to the Premium/Club/VIP Seat & Hospitality sector. Attendees were also treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the venue and a lunch sponsored by Levy Ireland.
The 2020 edition of ALSD International is being held in the UK this October 12-13, and will focus on how to increase revenue through new builds, renovations and service expansions, as well as via the latest technologies and innovations in F&B. The host and tour venues for the 2020 event will be announced in the coming days, as ALSD International transforms from a once a year conference and exhibition to a 365 community.
