San Antonio Spurs bolster downtown Arena team

Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E) have brought in new partners to beef up the NBA San Antonio Spurs’ downtown arena and district project team.

San Antonio-based Bartlett Cocke General Contractors will partner with Mortenson to lead construction management for the new arena, while San Antonio-based MP Studio will serve as the local landscape architecture advisor for the district master plan.

The Spurs are planning to build a 17,000-18,000 seat arena in Downton San Antonio, Texas, which will be ready in time for the 2030-31 NBA season.

RC Buford, CEO of Spurs Sports & Entertainment, said:

“We’ve said from the beginning that the people who call San Antonio home should help build what comes next for our city and today is an important step in delivering on that commitment.

“Bartlett Cocke and MP Studio bring deep local knowledge, relationships and an understanding of this community, while Mortenson offers exceptional experience building some of the best sports and entertainment venues in the country. Together, they understand what we’re trying to build and why it matters to San Antonio.”

These partner additions build on the project team announced earlier this year, bringing together national sports and entertainment experience with San Antonio-based construction and design expertise.

Mortenson and Bartlett Cocke – Arena Construction Management

MP Studio – Local Landscape Architecture Advisor

San Antonio-based MP Studio will serve as the local landscape architecture advisor for the district master plan, bringing a distinctly local perspective to the parks, plazas, streetscapes and public spaces that will shape the experience around the arena.

Working alongside Sasaki, MP Studio will draw on its deep understanding of San Antonio’s culture, climate and communities to help create a public realm that is authentic to our city and responsive to our environment.

The firm will bring a thoughtful approach to shade and thermal comfort, urban forestry, water management, resilient landscapes and connectivity, while helping create places that reflect San Antonio’s character and identity.

MP Studio’s community-centered approach will help ensure the district is welcoming, connected and designed for San Antonians on game days and every day.

Mark V. Padilla, PLA, Founder, MP Studio said:

“San Antonio is our home, and it means a great deal to our team to help shape a project of this significance. We’re proud to bring a local perspective to the district and help create places that feel unmistakably San Antonio.”
