Championship football club Swansea City FC has had an offer to buy the Swansea.com Stadium accepted by the City Council.
The Championship side have been in discussions with the council over the proposed purchase of the venue, their home since its opening in 2005.
The local authority built the stadium, with the football club taking operational control of the ground in 2018.
Council leader Rob Stewart said the sale price would be in excess of a “fair open-market value”.
A report put before cabinet said:
“Following lengthy negotiations, terms and conditions have been tentatively agreed which generate a large purchase price, plus additional contingent fees in the event of promotion, as well as retained ticket and hospitality benefits.”
Under the terms of the deal, the Club would gain ownership of the stadium, creating new opportunities to increase income, attract investment and support its long-term ambitions while benefiting the city as a whole.
The 2026 SVB LIVE Conference & Exhibition – focused on elevating the live experience across sports and entertainment – is being hosted at Everton FC’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium, Oct 1st and 2nd. An Opening Night Icebreaker will kick things off in style at Liverpool FC’s iconic Anfield Stadium on Sept 30th.
The negotiations have been supported by an independent valuation of the property carried out on behalf of the Council and demonstrating best value for the Council and the taxpayer. The club said in a statement:
“While the Club has played at the stadium for over 20 years, and held the lease since 2018, with Swansea City now being the only team playing at the venue it makes sense operationally and financially for the club to buy the stadium and to hold the asset in its own right.
“This is a move that will safeguard the future of the club, and we want to thank the representatives of the Council for their assistance and professionalism in helping us reach this point.”
Swansea City chief executive Tom Gorringe added:
“This is a highly significant moment for Swansea City as, after over two decades playing at the Swansea.com Stadium, we move towards taking outright ownership of the ground.
“I want to place on record our thanks and gratitude to the Council and their representatives for helping us to reach an agreement which is positive for all parties.
“Owning the Swansea.com Stadium is of major strategic benefit to the football club, and we look forward to completing the purchase in due course.”
Council Leader Cllr Rob Stewart said:
“The council wants the Swans to succeed and return to the Premier League.
“When Swansea City succeeds, the benefits extend far beyond the stadium. Local businesses benefit from increased footfall, jobs are supported, the city gains valuable international exposure, and communities enjoy a renewed sense of pride and optimism.”
