Work to resume on Casement Park after Judicial Review ruling

With Mr. Justice Humphreys having dismissed the legal challenge against the granting of planning permission for Casement Park, the Gaels of Antrim and Ulster, and the GAA at national level, can finally look forward to getting the long-awaited project underway.

Antrim GAA and Ulster GAA can now, finally, plan for the delivery of its provincial stadium and the last remaining project within the NI Executive’s Regional Sports Stadia Programme.

A joint club statement read:

We recognise the outstanding work of the Casement Park Project Team, their expertise, professionalism and dedication throughout this long journey. They have worked tirelessly to ensure that the transformational sporting, cultural and economic benefits of this iconic stadium can finally be realised.

We commend the Department for Infrastructure for their comprehensive approach to the planning process which was vindicated by today’s decision.

Our full efforts will now be focused on continuing to work with the Department for the Communities and its Regional Stadia Team, finalising all remaining aspects of the business case, implementing our extensive and far-reaching community engagement and benefits programme as we move towards the construction phase of the project.

Finally, we thank Gaels and the community of West Belfast for their overwhelming support and strength of voice throughout this process. To those that are opposed to the project we would like to assure them that we will be good neighbours, working closely with everyone throughout construction and when operational to bring positive benefits to the whole community.

The new stadium, designed by Populous, will include an iconic bowl design with a capacity of 34,578 and a range of mixed-use facilities

A Stadium for Everyone

Located on a 12 acre site on the Andersonstown Road in the west of Belfast, Casement Park is one of the largest stadia in Ulster, hosting football and hurling matches. The stadium will be redeveloped into an all-seated venue, which will become the largest stadium in Ulster and a regional flagship for Ulster GAA.

The 2022 edition of ALSD International is being hosted at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this September 19-20, with Populous on board as a Presenting Partner Sponsor. The main focus of this high-level event is optimising revenue through New Builds, Renovations & Service Expansions, with Architecture & Design, Fan Experience, Hospitality & Interiors, Premium Seating, Rebuilding & Recovery, Sales & Service, Sustainability and Technology some of the key pillars.

Populous’ design will provide a more accessible stadium building and new and improved facilities to serve the needs of the GAA’s, players and the local community, with up to 2,000m2 of dedicated community space.

The redevelopment will introduce 2,000 premium/corporate level seats and aims to secure additional major fixtures. It incorporates facilities to support a range of sporting and non-sporting uses, maximising the economic and social sustainability of the stadium.
