Pattern together with Buro Happold have won the concept design competition hosted by Dalian Wanda Group for a new 63,000-capacity stadium, which will be a host venue for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and the new home of Chinese Super League’s Dalian Professional FC.
Located on an incredible site on the waterfront of Dalian – a major city and seaport in the south of Liaoning Province – the spectacular new stadium will sit on a reclaimed peninsula, west of the port, boasting dramatic views across the bay.
The design has been inspired by the stadium’s unique location and the materials of the façade give a shimmering feel to the building as the different shells appear to float and twist within each other. At night, the stadium will be a spectacle of lighting reflecting off the sweeping building form.
The new Dalian stadium features a 1.6km tourist walking route from the podium to the roof, providing spectators with a breathtaking view of Dalian Bay and the community sports and leisure park to the East of the building.
The venue has been designed for the AFC Asian Cup, Asia’s most prestigious football event. Dalian is one of ten host cities set to share in the hosting duties, alongside Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Qingdao, Xiamen and Suzhou.
In legacy mode, the stadium will be home to Dalian Professional (formerly Dalian Yifang FC), who play in the top tier of Chinese football, the Chinese Super League.
Pattern – a generalist architecture practice with offices in London, Edinburgh and Lima – will provide full architecture and masterplanning services for the Suoyu Bay Stadium, with the project to be delivered locally by the Harbin Institute of Technology and Dalian Architectural Research & Design Institute. Buro Happold has been appointed as the structural, MEP and civil engineer for the project.
Although the final design concepts for the stadium have been released, these are set to develop as the project progresses. The invite-only competition was run by Chinese multinational conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group, with Pattern having been selected ahead of HPP and HKS.
Another UK-based architectural and design firm, AFL Architects, won the design competition for the Dalian Football Youth Training Academy back at the end of 2019.
