No.1 Court wins at Structural Steel Design Awards as KSS prepares to shine a light on Club Wembley’s evolution at ALSD International

The redeveloped No.1 Court at Wimbledon has won a prestigious award at the Structural Steel Design Awards 2019. The design practice behind the project, KSS, is also preparing to cross the Irish Sea ready to present their work on Club Wembley at next week’s ALSD International event, being held at Croke Park Stadium.

Constructed over a three-year period, the steelwork element of the redevelopment of the No.1 Court included the demolition of the existing roof built in 1997, infilling and extension of the level 4 and 5 floorplate steel and new fixed roof, followed by the construction of a moving roof that provides full rain cover during The Championships.

The judges feedback was extremely positive:

This extraordinarily complex work was carried out over three seasons with minimum public awareness. Large movable steel trusses installed to very exacting tolerances over the existing building provide a roof that can shelter a match from rain within minutes.

The No.1 Court project delivery team comprised KSS, contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, cost consultants Turner & Townsend, structural engineers Thornton Tomasetti, building services engineers ME Engineers, landscape architects Hyland Edgar Driver and fire consultants OFR.
