VIDEO: The No.1 Court Project at Wimbledon – The Final Year

Take a look at how the final year of the No. 1 Court redevelopment at Wimbledon, including the addition of a much-needed roof, was completed…

Leading sports design practice, KSS was appointment by The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (AELTC) to provide a full range of architectural and design services for the redevelopment of No.1 Court at Wimbledon; with the three-year project to come to fruition this year.

The scope of work includes new hospitality and support facilities together with a fixed and retractable roof covering both the playing arena and spectator seating, giving the potential for uninterrupted championship tournament play.

The contemporary façade properly respects Wimbledon’s unique heritage, and the new facilities will further enhance the quality of the spectator experience, thereby supporting AELTC’s aim of maintaining Wimbledon’s status as the premier Grand Slam event in world tennis.

SCX Special Projects, part of the SCX Group, was awarded a three-year contract to construct a retractable roof over No.1 Court after successfully designing, manufacturing and installing a similar retractable roof over Wimbledon’s Centre Court in 2009.
The new folding roof over No.1 Court is part of a significant redevelopment that will increase seating capacity and transform the grass court arena into one capable of guaranteed play in all weather conditions.

SCX Group said:

It’s been a great journey with AELTC to engineer and install their second retractable roof at Wimbledon.
