Real Madrid unveils four-year Santiago Bernabéu refurbishment plans

Real Madrid presented their four-year remodelling plans for Santiago Bernabéu at an event held in the stadium earlier this week, led by club President, Florentino Pérez.

Held in the stadium’s presidential box, Pérez was joined by the mayor of Madrid, Manuela Carmena, as well as Honorary Club President, Paco Gento, and a wide representation of the club’s Board of Directors, among others.

Pérez unveiled computerised images of the redevelopment and advised the gathered dignitaries and media that he believes the project will create additional revenue streams of up to €150m per annum, which he said will allow the LaLiga club to remain competitive in an increasingly competitive market.

Real Madrid President, Florentino Pérez, outlined how Santiago Bernabéu is set to undergo a major €450m facelift, which will ensure it continues to be a global benchmark within the worlds of sport and architecture:

The new stadium will continue to be the setting that generates the emotions which will leave their mark on Real Madrid’s future. It’ll be the best stadium in the world in which to see us once again recognised at the end of the century as the best club of the 21st century. It’ll offer a new stadium, heritage and be a new source of pride for our members and fans.

The transformation will deliver a more modern, more comfortable and safer Santiago Bernabéu stadium, designed for entertainment, with new areas of leisure and catering and where the most advanced technology will be key for fans to live new experiences

Speaking about the transformation, Pérez said:
This event is the definitive start of the countdown to launch an authentic architectural innovation in our stadium. A Santiago Bernabéu stadium that will become a great avant-garde and universal icon. Located in the heart of Madrid, it will be the best stadium in the world. We are facing one of the great projects of the future for Real Madrid and, of course, it will be also for the city of Madrid.
Our future naturally involves a new Santiago Bernabéu stadium, a reference of the 21st century. A modern, avant-garde stadium, with maximum comfort and safety, with state-of-the-art technology, where fans can experience unique sensations and also be a new and important source of income for the club.
This great project will become a key piece for the Real Madrid of the future, but also for the city of Madrid. And it will be because the new Santiago Bernabéu stadium, located in the heart of Madrid, will be the best stadium in the world. More modern, more comfortable, safer and designed for entertainment, with new areas of leisure and catering and where the most advanced technology will be key for fans to live new experiences.
Key drivers for the project include delivering a modern, avant-garde stadium, with maximum comfort and safety, with state-of-the-art technology, where fans can experience unique sensations and also be a new and important source of income for the club
Pérez went on to detail how the project would deliver not only an improved stadium for Real Madrid but also for the community and surrounding area:
A new stadium that will allow us to continue growing and that will be financed with the new revenues that the remodelling will generate. The new Santiago Bernabéu stadium will entail an important improvement for the club, but also for its surroundings. And it will allow Real Madrid to remain competitive in an increasingly difficult international football setting.

Shortly, the first moves will begin, that will also serve to improve the entire urban environment, with a large square on the Castellana of more than 20,000sqm and another of 5,500sqm on the corner of Padre Damián. In addition, Rafael Salgado Street will become a pedestrian street and the whole environment will be improved in an operation that will extend over 66,000sqm.
The remodelling of Santiago Bernabéu will include a retractable roof, a 360-degree video scoreboard and a surrounding skin of steel bands that will allow images to be illuminated and projected on the exterior surface of the stadium
Speaking about the digital transformation and the standout feature of the stadium, its surrounding ‘skin’, he said:
This is a great opportunity to also turn our stadium into a great technological platform that serves to relate to our fans and star in a digital transformation. We will have a spectacular 360-degree video scoreboard that will be one of the emblematic elements of the new Santiago Bernabéu stadium. We want, in short, to be the great digital stadium of the future.

The new stadium will present an immersive and avant-garde image thanks to a skin of steel bands and variable lines that will allow to illuminate and project images. A project that includes a fixed and retractable roof over the playing field and that will allow all locations to be protected.

Santiago Bernabéu transformation

The joint project led by GMP Arquitectos and L35 Ribas successfully secured the tender to oversee a revamp of a stadium that is poised to become a global role model. The renovation work will see the Bernabéu become a state-of-the-art arena that satisfies the demands of club members, whilst also increasing Real Madrid’s revenue streams. The reimagined venue will offer the option for the pitch to be covered by both permanent and retractable roofs, a feature which will ensure that all of the seating areas are covered.
Back in November, Real Madrid signed a deal with sponsorship sales agency Legends to help secure additional funding for the project. It was then reported in February that the club had secured a €575m loan for the project from Bank of America Merrill Lynch and JP Morgan.
Scheduled to get underway this summer, the remodelling will include a retractable roof, a 360-degree video scoreboard and a surrounding skin of steel bands that will allow images to be illuminated and projected on the exterior surface of the stadium.

Real Madrid was one of the many clubs that joined sports architects & designers, alongside stadium, arena, racetrack and other high-level representatives from sports venues, leagues and federations to discuss Premium Seating & Hospitality and how to increase revenue through new builds, renovations and service expansions at the inaugural ALSD International event, held in London last year. The 2019 edition will be held at Croke Park – Europe’s third largest stadium – in Dublin, Ireland, this October, 28-29.
