Drawing on four years of collaboration with Tixserve – a white-label digital ticket fulfilment and fan engagement app provider – alongside the English and Scottish Rugby Unions, Dan Cook, Head of Ticketing at the Welsh Rugby Union and Principality Stadium, transformed digital ticket fulfilment from a routine operational entry step into a high-yield commercial storefront and fan engagement channel.
By treating the mobile ticket canvas as prime digital media estate during delivery, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) converted routine ticket interactions into immediate revenue spikes while capturing verified first-party data across their entire audience.
Key Performance Metrics
- £500,000+ Revenue: In app adverts generated over £500,000 in seasonal ticket revenue.
- 100% Attendance Identification: Eliminated anonymous “ghost tickets” across all entry points.
- 850,000+ Total Verified App Users: Built a verified database of 816,000 main stadium app users and 34,000 hospitality clients over four years.
- £1,500 Average Sales Per Operational Push: Non-marketing, event information-focused notifications consistently triggered secondary spikes in ticket purchases felt immediately.
- Vital Conversion Channel: Mobile fulfilment now performs on a par with all primary direct sales and fan support content.
The Challenge: Eliminating Data Blind Spots & Unofficial Resale
During the pandemic, the WRU adopted Tixserve for contact tracing. Ticketing leadership soon identified how Tixserve could be used to address a deeper challenge by which traditional paper and static PDF tickets created severe data blind spots.
Dan Cook, Head of Ticketing, WRU & Principality Stadium, said:
“It’s no longer ‘John Smith buys four tickets, and we’ve got John Smith’s information but no oversight of the three others.’ We now know all four people.”
The WRU established four core operational and commercial objectives:
- Identify Every Seat Holder: Administer named digital transfers during ticket delivery.
- Control Turnstile Flows: Gain real-time visibility over stadium entry dynamics and peak arrival times.
- Combat Unofficial Resale: Track bulk holdings in real time to identify and block touting networks.
- Unify the Digital Touchpoint: Consolidate fulfilment, fan guidance, venue navigation, and cross-selling into a single-entry flow.

The Strategy: Monetising the Fulfilment Canvas
Because 100% of fans must open their digital ticket to gain entry, the fulfilment screen represents the most valuable visual media asset – not only on matchdays, but 365 days a year.
- High-Yield Placement & A/B Testing: Treating the app’s interface as a high-intent digital storefront, the WRU continuously tested ad positioning, geographic targeting, and event mix across non-rugby events (Monster Jam) and core fixtures (Women’s Six Nations, Under-20s). Methodical layout optimisation – specifically repositioning high-margin partner offers directly above the dynamic barcode – proved that visual hierarchy dictates yield, driving season sales from an initial £37,000 baseline up to a peak of £500,000+.
- High-Conversion Operational Push Messaging: By layering engaging and relevant content throughout the app, the WRU saw consistent spikes in secondary sales.
- Strategic Tri-Union Product Co-Development: Alongside the English (RFU) and Scottish (SRU) unions, the WRU actively co-developed Tixserve’s product roadmap through structured knowledge-sharing sessions – ensuring rapid feature rollouts tailored directly to major international venues.
Tixserve’s Co-Founder & Head of Operations, James Kirby, joined a “Tech Talk” panel session alongside Iwo Gernemann of VisioLab and Chris Gore of SPOR Group at the 2026 SVB LIVE Conference & Exhibition – focused on elevating the live experience – which took place at Everton FC’s Hill Dickinson Stadium, with an Opening Night Icebreaker at Liverpool FC’s Anfield Stadium.

Technology Architecture: Tixserve + Primary Ticketing
While the WRU utilises Ticketmaster as its primary ticketing engine for inventory management and access control; Tixserve operates as a dynamic engagement layer on top, transforming a static entry asset into an agile media-centric platform.
Dan Cook, Head of Ticketing, WRU & Principality Stadium, explained:
“It’s become an integral part of our ticketing operation, ensuring we maximise the level of engagement, customisation, commercial opportunity and in-depth knowledge of our fans. The ticket has now become part of the experience, not just a way to get in the stadium.”
Executive Blueprint for Venues & Rights Holders
- Treat the Fulfilment Screen Like Prime Media Estate: Continuously test visual ad placements; visual hierarchy directly drives audience conversion.
- Transform Tickets into Event Engines: Embed food and beverage pre-ordering, fan engagement tools, and venue help content directly within the ticket canvas.
- Protect Revenue via Audience Transparency: Real-time transfer visibility helps eliminate unofficial secondary markets while securing direct relationships with every attendee.
By transforming digital ticket fulfilment into a data-rich engagement engine, the WRU demonstrated how modern ticketing architecture delivers both measurable commercial returns and an upgraded matchday experience – proving that ticket delivery is no longer a passive operational step, but a primary commercial channel.
