Works start at Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium

Preparatory works have kicked off at Australia’s Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium, marking another major milestone in one of Tasmania’s largest and most significant infrastructure projects.

Hazell Bros is undertaking the bulk earthworks following a competitive procurement process.

The works, which will run through until mid-2027, will prepare the site for stadium construction and include bulk excavation of around 100,000 cubic metres of soil, site preparation and archaeological investigations, before major construction starts.

The Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium is a 23,000-seat, domed venue under development in Hobart, Tasmania, featuring a fixed translucent roof and serving as the future home of the Tasmanian AFL team.

Procurement for the main stadium construction is also progressing, with a tender process currently underway.

The successful construction contractor is expected to be appointed at the end of the year, as the project continues to build momentum.

The Macquarie Point Precinct is one of the most transformative urban renewal projects ever undertaken in Tasmania, unlocking a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reconnect Hobart’s CBD with the waterfront, while creating a vibrant destination for Tasmanians and visitors alike.

The multipurpose stadium is a foundational development for the site and is expected to support thousands of jobs during construction and create lasting economic benefits through increased visitation, business investment and major events, while providing long-term community infrastructure for future generations.

The 2026 SVB LIVE Conference & Exhibition – focused on elevating the live experience across sports and entertainment – is being hosted at Everton FC’s spectacular new Hill Dickinson Stadium, Oct 1st and 2nd, with an Opening Night Icebreaker at Liverpool FC’s iconic Anfield Stadium on Sept 30th.

Premier of Tasmania Jeremy Rockliff said:

“Today marks another important milestone as we continue turning the vision for Macquarie Point into a reality. The diggers have arrived, the builders are here, and we are getting on with the job.

“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are delivering this once-in-a-generation project. It will support thousands of jobs, inject billions into our economy and create a precinct that all Tasmanians can be proud of.”

Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said:

“The revitalisation of the Macquarie Point Precinct will drive tourism, create economic opportunity and support a more vibrant Hobart.

“The Albanese Government is proud to partner with the Tasmanian Government to deliver Mac Point and today’s milestone shows how far we have already come. Projects of this scale create jobs, support local businesses and serve as a legacy for communities.”

Tasmanian Minister for Macquarie Point Urban Renewal Eric Abetz added:

“These preparatory works are an exciting first step as we prepare for activity to increase. The precinct will become one of Australia’s great waterfront urban renewal projects, delivering improved public spaces, stronger connections to the city and waterfront, and of course, our stadium.

“These will drive new opportunities for investment, business, housing and tourism – all key pillars of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future. Every milestone brings us closer to creating a precinct that will deliver lasting economic activity and benefits for Tasmania.”
