Tender launched for Gran Canaria Stadium renovation work

A €175 million tender has been launched for expansion and renovation of the Gran Canaria Stadium by the Island’s Council.

The ‘La Nube’ project will increase the stadium’s capacity to 44,484 spectators from 32,418 currently and transform it into a multifunctional venue over a three-year period.

L35 Architects last year signed a contract for the renovation and expansion of Gran Canaria Stadium, the home of Spanish Segunda Division club Unión Deportiva de Las Palmas.

The remodelling of the venue in Siete Palmas will deliver new dining areas, conference rooms, and a sports innovation hub to ensure year-round use.

The expansion is crucial if the island is to have a chance of becoming a host of the 2030 World Cup. This would require the works to be completed by July 2029.

The 2026 SVB LIVE Conference & Exhibition – focused on elevating the live experience – is being hosted at Everton FC’s spectacular new Hill Dickinson Stadium on October 1st and 2nd, with an Opening Night Icebreaker at Liverpool FC’s iconic Anfield Stadium on September 30th.

L35 Architects said the stadium’s distinctive white, translucent architecture will allow it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings while forming a unique, environmentally conscious urban microclimate with advanced acoustic absorption.

One of the most significant improvements will be accessibility. The design introduces large open spaces in the Northeast and the Southwest corners to facilitate smoother entry and exit, seamlessly integrating with the surrounding urban landscape.

The North and South Stands will be repositioned, enhancing proximity to the pitch for fans without altering the existing levels.

The North Stand will be designed to accommodate events such as concerts through the use of retractable seating. The hospitality areas, the VIP lounges and the food and beverage (F&B) services will be significantly upgraded.

The renovation includes a new wrap-around stand to optimize natural light and passive ventilation. The roof will feature a lightweight radial structure, supported by a compression ring and 44 pillars, and will integrate moisture capture systems, photovoltaic panels, and rainwater harvesting.

The renovation work is planned to be carried out in phases to allow for partial use of the stadium during construction, balancing sports activities with building work.

The Cabildo (Island Council) and Unión Deportiva de Las Palmas have signed an agreement, pending development, through which the Segunda Division club will contribute €60 million to the renovation.

The deadline for submissions to the €174.71 million tender is July 7.
