Populous designs new boutique stadium and training centre for Brisbane Lions

The exciting future home of the Brisbane Lions commenced construction this week when Chairman, Andrew Wellington, joined a host of senior political leaders for the official sod turning ceremony for the Club’s $70m Training and Administration Facility at Springfield.

Global architecture giant, Populous, has designed the new boutique 9,000-seat stadium and training facility for the Brisbane Lions AFLW and AFL teams.

Brighton Homes Arena is located 30km south of Brisbane in Springfield, the complex will include a purpose-built elite training area with indoor field, gymnasium, a swimming pool and community spaces when construction is completed in late 2022.

The stadium will be utilised for AFLW Queensland, representative matches and junior development. With a huge increase in popularity of girls and women playing AFL, the new Brighton Homes Arena will provide opportunities and legacy for growing generations of AFLW players and supporters. The training facilities will cater to all levels from elite athletes to junior teams, promoting the development of talent across all ages.

This project will have a transformative impact upon our club’s ability to stage AFL women’s matches in a manner expected by our Queensland supporters. It will also improve development pathways for junior footballers from across southern Queensland and help our AFL and AFLW athletes to reach their full potential.

Brighton Homes Arena will offer modern amenities for up to 10,000 spectators, with a grandstand seating 600 fans and permanent shade, toilets and disabled seating. The public will enjoy access to a range of recreational facilities which will form part of the open community hub all-year round.

Populous will be sharing insights on the future of stadium design at this September’s ALSD International conference and exhibition being hosted by Liverpool Football Club.

Brighton Homes Arena will have live broadcasting of the AFLW Premiership season and other major events through the latest technical media infrastructure.

The project has been made possible thanks to a $20m contribution from Ipswich City Council, $18m from the Queensland Government and $15m from the Australian Government, as well as matching investment from the Lions and the AFL.

An administration centre with meeting rooms, an auditorium and café will provide new revenue streams for the Brisbane Lions club. The facility also aims to provide development programs and support for junior teams and the local Springfield community.

Brighton Homes Arena will be the first newly purpose-built sports facility to provide elite training amenities for both professional women’s and men’s AFL teams.
