The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) is seeking to appoint two Non-Executive Directors to the Birmingham Organising Committee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

 

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will demonstrate the very best of Global Britain to the world, showcasing the region’s strengths of: being connected and accessible; youth and inclusivity; and a focus on regeneration and rejuvenation. Birmingham is perfectly positioned to attract people to the Games and to ensure that the benefits of hosting extend from the city and region to the UK and the Commonwealth.

 

The Commonwealth Games Federation awarded the hosting rights for the 2022 Games to Birmingham on 21st December 2017. Since then, the DCMS has been working with the Commonwealth Games Federation, Commonwealth Games England, Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority to commence work on the delivery of a world-class Games.

 

The OC requires two Non-Executive Directors with a mix of skills from a variety of backgrounds. Candidates will have been involved with the delivery of complex, multi-stakeholder projects in the public eye and the scale of budget required for an event of this size, or have a background in business or community engagement. They will be strong advocates for sport and be passionate about the Commonwealth Games movement and its ambitions for positive social and economic benefits for individuals and communities within Birmingham and the West Midlands.

 

Person Specification

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate:

 

  • A strong track record of delivery – an experience of working on major sporting events or equivalent logistical challenges, or in business or community engagement with skills that are directly transferable to the challenges of delivering the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022
  • Political sensitivity and understanding, with the ability to secure the confidence of those around them, and to build highly effective, influential and collaborative relationships, particularly with local government
  • Passion for Birmingham and the West Midlands and a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities that the Games will present to the area’s people, businesses and communities
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • The ability to influence and offer guidance on strategy, governance, commercial and financial matters that cross service, sector and professional boundaries

 

About Birmingham 2022 Ltd.

The Commonwealth Games is one of the world’s largest multi-sport events, bringing together over 4,000 of the world’s elite athletes every four years, in an 11 day festival of sport and culture. The Games are watched by hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic spectators and seen by a potential global TV audience of 2.1 billion. It is a unique opportunity for a host city to promote itself on the global stage, and an opportunity to bring lasting social, economic and sporting benefits to local communities. The Birmingham Organising Committee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games Ltd (OC) is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) set up to lead on the organisation of the Games. Its sponsoring government department is DCMS.

 

The role of the OC is to deliver an outstanding 2022 Commonwealth Games for the athletes, the spectators, those in the host city, the country and the whole Commonwealth Games family. The OC Board comprises a salaried part-time Chair, five appointed Non-Executive Directors, and a number of nominees from each of the partners, DCMS, Commonwealth Games Federation, Commonwealth Games England, Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority.

 

As an NDPB, certain governance structures will be required by government, and in addition to attending the OC Board, successful candidates will also be required to participate in other board committees as necessary, potentially drawn from the Audit & Risk Committee, the Contract Approval Committee, Athletes Advisory Committee, and the Community Engagement Committee.

 

The Non-Executive Directors will be appointed to the OC until June 2023 following the completion of the Games to ensure an orderly wind-down of the Games.
