Laws aimed at giving police greater powers to keep the public safe during the Commonwealth Games have been passed by the Palaszczuk Government.
Police Minister, Mark Ryan, said the new laws strike the right balance between giving the police the tools they need to provide for the safety and security of the Games in today’s current world environment, and respecting individual civil liberties.
The new laws will enhance public safety by building on the proactive capability of the Queensland Police Service to meet the additional and unique demands presented by the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).
Minister Ryan said:
The new powers only relate to Games related public spaces, access routes to venues and transport hubs and links – and will see police able to stop, check and search people and vehicles without a warrant. They will allow police to act quickly to deter and disrupt any potential threat in areas of mass gathering and transport.
The Palaszczuk Government is committed to making these Games the best ever. We are indeed fortunate to live in an open and inclusive society and will showcase the Queensland spirit to the world. Public safety is paramount and these new laws for the Games are about keeping the public safe in public places and adding another tool to the existing suite of strategies that police employ to ensure our safety.
The new legislation allows areas where masses of people will gather in public spacesand at transport hubs for the Games to be declared as protective security zones.
Commissioner Ian Stewart said these additional police powers were Games-specific and would apply for the duration of the Games:
Our priority is keeping the public safe. These powers promote public safety in public places; they do not create new offences or impact rights such as the right to peaceful assembly.
800 Games jobs on offer ahead of GC2018
In other GC2018 news, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced a new jobs push, ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, with 800 positions to be advertised over the coming months.
Premier Palaszczuk said with only just over 300 days until the Games, the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) were looking to fill a wide range of positions:
In April next year, 6600 athletes from more than 70 nations will converge on our state for the biggest sporting event Australia has seen this decade. To deliver an event of this scale we need a large and diverse skilled workforce. That’s why I’m pleased to announce, from this Sunday, GOLDOC will launch a new recruitment drive to fill 800 positions ahead of the Games. We are committed to delivering the best Commonwealth Games ever, just as we are committed to delivering jobs for Queenslanders. This will be the final intake of staff ahead of the Games, taking the total GOLDOC workforce to around 1,500.
Commonwealth Games Minister, Kate Jones, said GOLDOC was seeking passionate people with a range of skills and expertise:
GOLDOC is looking to fill positions in key areas including Transport, Logistics, Accommodation, Security, Spectator Services, Games Venues and many more. The first phase of applications opens this Sunday, with a second phase of recruitment to commence in August. For successful applicants, this could be a career game-changer to work alongside major events experts from around the world. I’d encourage anyone interested to put up their hand up for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of the GOLDOC team.
GOLDOC Chairman, Peter Beattie AC, said experiences gained and networks created by working at the Games could lead to future work in a wide range of sectors including major events, commercial, sports and venues:
We have a highly skilled team currently in place and this will be the final phase of recruitment for GOLDOC in the lead up to the Games. Joining the GOLDOC team is a career game changer, allowing staff to fast track their career skills and experience, whilst working alongside global event experts. Plenty of staff have worked on multiple Games with opportunities around the Globe following 2018.
GOLDOC Chief Executive Officer, Mark Peters, said all positions would be advertised on the Seek Commonwealth Games Jobs Portal:
GC2018 is a dynamic, fast paced and rewarding environment. While all the positions are short term contracts until the end of the Games, successful applicants have the opportunity to supercharge their careers by being involved in delivering the largest sporting event in Australia this decade.
The Commonwealth Games will be held from 4 to 15 April 2018, bringing 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations and territories to the Gold Coast.
