TAKING FLIGHT: YTL Arena Complex Bristol plans ready for take-off
The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government has made the decision not to call in the application for YTL Arena Complex, Bristol.
The Secretary of State was happy with the decision made by Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council, and saw no reason to further examine YTL Arena Complex, Bristol‘s application.
On 4 March, Bristol City Council’s planning committee voted to approve the application to build a 17,080-capacity arena in the Brabazon Hangars on Filton Airfield.
On 19 March, South Gloucestershire Council’s planning committee approved the applications to build a temporary 1,800 space car park, access for delivery vehicles from the north, across the former airfield and via West Way, and a new pedestrian bridge over the existing railway track, which will serve as the main entrance to the arena.
This decision is the final approval needed to push forward plans to deliver an arena for Bristol and the South West. It will be the third largest arena in the UK, putting Bristol on the world stage for live music and entertainment.

The Brabazon Hangars will offer three individual but interlinked areas:
• Central Hangar – YTL Arena: 17,080-capacity, the third largest in the UK. Multi-purpose, flexible and unique arena auditorium, allowing Bristol to host full capacity live music shows, but also to offer sporting events, family entertainment (e.g. Dancing on Ice, Strictly Come Dancing) and comedy shows.
• East Hangar – Festival Hall: a flat floor space for trade shows, exhibitions, conventions and other events.
• West Hangar – The Hub: a place to eat, work and play. With a visitor attraction, leisure, workspace and food and drink.
Together, they will offer a 365 day a year thriving entertainment destination, attracting large scale, live events and new business to the region.

Could you be YTL Arena’s Project Director?
With the YTL Arena Complex having been given the green light, the arena team is now moving forward with this exciting project to put Bristol on the world stage for live music and entertainment by reimagining the Brabazon hangars.
The Brabazon hangars are steeped in history. They are the birthplace of Concorde and Supersonic travel, and will have new life breathed into them, transforming them into an exciting, vibrant destination open all year round, offering a range of entertainment events, and creating a new place to eat, work and play. YTL Arena Complex is part of a GBP 2bn Brabazon new neighbourhood investment which will provide a GBP 1.5bn economic boost to the city region.
YTL is looking for a Project Director with experience of public entertainment projects in stadiums, arenas or large entertainment venues valued in excess of GBP£60m. You will lead the project team and manage the supply chain to deliver the project on time, meeting cost and quality targets and standards. The successful candidate will have significant previous experience in project management and managing complex jobs within the construction industry.
Leadership will come naturally to you, as you will be influencing and communicating with internal and external stakeholders to deliver daily targets. Most of all, we would like you to be adaptable, innovative and an excellent team player with a passion for the Arena Complex and surrounding neighbourhood.
So, what else is YTL looking for?
- Establishing and maintaining governance arrangements for the delivery of the project, defining clear roles, responsibilities and accountabilities that align with YTL organisational practice.
- Securing the provision of resources needed for the project from internal and/or external providers.
- Agreeing contracts for the provision of goods and/or services, monitoring compliance and managing variances.
- Determining the best means of satisfying requirements within the context of the project deliverables i.e. developing solutions.
- Preparing and maintaining the project programme, taking account of dependencies and resource requirements.
- Developing, implementing and updating resource allocations plans (other than finance) needed for the project, taking account of availabilities and scheduling.
- Developing and agreeing budgets for the project and controlling forecast and actual costs against them.
- Identifying and monitoring project risks (threats and opportunities), planning and implementing responses to them and responding to other issues that affect the project.
- Developing, maintaining and applying quality management processes for project activities and outputs.
- Consolidating and documenting the Project Execution Plan (scope, schedule, resource requirements, budgets, risks, opportunities and issues, and quality requirements).
- Establishing, and implementing where necessary, protocols to change the scope of the project and updating relevant documents as required.

YTL will be owner and operator of YTL Arena Complex
YTL will fund and operate the YTL Arena Complex, giving them the ability to manage all aspects of the business. As owner and operator, they can ensure that their ambitions for the YTL Arena Complex are fulfilled and have full control over everything from construction to operations, including working with local businesses, traffic management, ticketing, programming, customer services, recruitment and procurement.
YTL will source more than 70% of goods and services locally, working in partnership with businesses in the South West to supply everything from food and drink, to services such as photography and lighting. It will champion local businesses and showcase what the Bristol city region has to offer to visitors.
YTL Arena Complex will be net zero carbon from day one of opening. Throughout construction, YTL will save 18,600 CO2 emissions by repurposing the Brabazon hangars. Air source heat pumps will provide ambient heating and cooling, while LED lighting will be used throughout the complex, linked back to an intelligent building management system.
Once the arena is open, YTL will use rainwater harvesting to reduce water consumption by more than 70%, and solar panels on the roof along with battery storage will allow YTL to generate enough energy to make the building energy neutral. There will be no gas on site.
