Reporting to the Head of Sport Competition this a great opportunity to join the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games as a Sport Competition Cluster Manager.

 

In July 2022, Birmingham will host the XXII Commonwealth Games, the largest multi-sport event to be held in England in 10 years. Approximately 6,500 athletes and team officials from 71 nations and territories across the Commonwealth will come together in a 12-day celebration of sport and culture. Events will take place across Birmingham and the West Midlands, entertaining more than one million ticketed spectators and reaching a global broadcast audience of more than one billion.

 

Each of the signatories to the Host City Contract (HCC); the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), UK Government, Birmingham City Council and Commonwealth Games England (CGE) together with the Organising Committee (OC) have key roles role in the planning and delivery of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, both individually and collectively to ensure that the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the host community legacies derived from hosting the Games are a huge success.

 

The parties to the HCC have established Birmingham Organising Committee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games Ltd as the Organising Committee (‘OC’). The scope of the OC’s role is broad and complex and ranges from ensuring the physical readiness of the venues and temporary facilities, to the planning, coordination and delivery of more than 40 operational functions such as transport, security and catering to meet the needs of the Games, including the athletes, technical officials, spectators, press, broadcasters and other Games Family and stakeholders.

 

The OC and partners are committed to delivering the Games as efficiently and effectively as possible to ensure the event is sustainable and accessible to all in the long term. We are seeking individuals to join us who are innovative, commercially astute and have a genuine passion and interest in delivering the most sustainable, inclusive and accessible Commonwealth Games to date.

 

About the Role:

Reporting to the Head of Sport Competition this a great opportunity to join the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games as a Sport Competition Cluster Manager.

 

The Sport Competition Cluster Managers will be responsible for the oversight of planning for a cluster of 4-5 Games sports, coordinating the collection of sport specific competition requirements and dissemination of information to internal Games functional areas to enable integrated planning for each sport within the designated cluster. The role will also fulfil the responsibilities of a Competition Manager for one identified Games sport throughout the planning process and through to delivery at Games time.

 

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

Responsibilities of the role will evolve during the lifespan of the Organising Committee and it is likely that the role profile will evolve with the changing needs of the OC.

  • Develop relationships with selected International Sport Federations and associated English/UK Governing Bodies, ensuring that the later are included in planning and discussions where possible;
  • Oversee the planning for a cluster of 4-5 Games sports and directly manage the detailed planning and Games time operation of one identified sport, ensuring delivery to a World Class level;
  • Work closely with the relevant English/UK Governing Bodies on the appointment and development of National Technical Officials and the sourcing, training and development of the sport specific volunteer workforce;
  • Manage the development of each sport specific delivery plan, sourcing the required sport specific technical information and providing it to Games Functional Areas;
  • Support the development and implementation of key sport competition elements including the competition schedule, International Federation visits and operational policies;
  • Coordinate regular communication with identified sport stakeholders and delivery agencies, to develop and maintain effective relationships;
  • Actively contribute to venue and operational planning to ensure sport specific technical elements are effectively integrated into Games wide planning;
  • Ensure the Field of Play (FoP) for each sport is being designed and delivered in line with the required technical and competition standards of the International Sport Federations;
  • Recruit and manage the Competition Managers for the designated sports to help build a strong competition management team;
  • Lead on the engagement with local community groups and associations to ensure the recruitment of a diverse workforce for the Games;
  • In conjunction with the Workforce functional area, create workforce training programmes that will inspire, enthuse and motivate the Sport Competition and wider Games workforce;
  • Act as a mentor to individuals within the Sport Competition team, creating a supportive and empowering environment, ensuring opportunities for personal development are maximised;
  • Support the completion of relevant sport competition milestones and project plans and related reporting, in line with the Games wide project plan;
  • Identify testing and readiness requirements and develop a sport specific test event strategy in conjunction with the Games readiness strategy.
