New Zealand Rugby (NZR) is one of New Zealand’s largest sporting organisations that supports, grows and promotes the game of rugby.


Established in 1892, NZR aims to be a world leading sports organisation that inspires and unifies. With direct relationships with its members, including The All Blacks and all 26 Provincial Unions, Investec Super Rugby teams, sponsors and stakeholders, NZR is committed to New Zealand rugby being financially secure and contributing actively to the global game.


The Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Following the resignation of the incumbent, the NZR Board are seeking a new Chief Executive Officer to provide bold and innovative thought leadership and build commercial strategies and alliances aligned to current and future needs of the organisation.


NZR faces a number of challenges and opportunities and the CEO will need to provide bold and innovative thought leadership and build commercial strategies and alliances aligned to current and future needs. The ability to work across the sector and organisation to help develop and drive new revenue streams, product and service lines and drive player participation, diversity and inclusion will be key milestone achievements.


The Person

Open to candidates from a variety of backgrounds, at a minimum s/he will need to demonstrate a passion/empathy for the game combined with a proven track record of significant commercial leadership. NZR is now a $200m+ business with plans to go to $250m by 2025. Much of the revenue which sustains the game comes from negotiating significant offshore sponsorships which need to be maintained and strengthened.


Prior experience successfully traversing complex multi-stakeholder environments, both domestically and internationally, with excellent negotiating, facilitating and influencing skills will be crucial. A connectedness to New Zealand is also important.


As an ambassador for NZR and, to an extent, the country, candidates will be trained and/or experienced in media and comfortable in a role that has a high level of scrutiny and requires a significant amount of stakeholder engagement.


The role also demands extensive domestic and international travel.
