VIDEO: Al Thumama Stadium Progress – May 2019 | Qatar 2022

With all concrete works completed, the truly iconic Al Thumama Stadium – a 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ quarter-final venue – is rising up.

Al Thumama Stadium is steeped in the culture, history and symbolism of Qatar and the region. This 40,000-seat stadium will host 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ matches through to the quarter-finals.

Al Thumama Stadium’s impact will be felt long after the curtain comes down on the tournament. In legacy mode, the stadium’s capacity will be reduced to meet local needs and provide quality sporting infrastructure to developing nations. The remaining 20,000-seat arena will be used for football and other sporting events.

In addition, a branch of the world-renowned Aspetar Sports Clinic will open on site, and a boutique hotel will replace the upper stands.

The renowned Arab Engineering Bureau (AEB) – one of the oldest architectural and engineering firms in Qatar – was responsible for the concept and schematic design of Al Thumama Stadium. AEB has been awarded numerous local and international architectural awards for a style that perfectly incorporates and reflects Qatari, Arab and Islamic culture.

As with all 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ venues, Al Thumama Stadium is targeting Global Sustainability Assessment System Trust (GSAS) 4-star certification for both design and construction. As part of this, the existing energy centre on the site will be refurbished and upgraded to meet the latest energy efficiency standards.
