Seating contracts for three 2022 FIFA World Cup™ host stadia awarded to Qatari company

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) has awarded the contract to manufacture the seats for three of the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ proposed host venues to Coastal Qatar, a specialised Qatari manufacturing and construction company.

The seats will be manufactured in Coastal Qatar’s Doha-based, state-of-the-art factory, which will produce 500 seats a day to cater to the three proposed host venues: Al Wakrah Stadium, Al Bayt Stadium – Al Khor City and Al Rayyan Stadium.

As the seats will be manufactured locally, when fans arrive at these arenas in 2022, they will all read “Made in Qatar”. Coastal Qatar will not only supply, but also install and maintain the 140,000 seats for the three stadiums. In tournament mode, host stadiums Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah will have 40,000 net seating and Al Bayt Stadium – Al Khor City 60,000 net seating.

H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, SC Secretary General, said:

We are very proud to announce that these seats for the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be made in Qatar. In line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, we are continuously working to contribute to the economic growth of the country in terms of manufacturing and a wide variety of other sectors.

Creating an impact on Qatar’s economy was a key component in our bid to win the FIFA World Cup hosting rights. By facilitating local contractors and companies to take part in the construction of the infrastructure for the tournament, we are delivering one of our key legacy commitments and ensuring the benefits of the 2022 FIFA World Cup are felt across the country.

Like a true nomad’s tent, Al Bayt will be portable. The top tier of seating will be removed following the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ and given to developing nations that need stadium seating

Sheikh Mansour bin Jabor Al-Thani, Chairman of Coastal, said:

It is an honour to be selected to provide the seats for three of Qatar’s futuristic stadiums for 2022 with technology transfer from Forum Seating.

Our goal is to be one of the leading and most innovative companies in our sector in the country, with the capabilities to absorb knowledge from leading international companies and transfer that knowledge locally. The main principle of our company is to always promote the brand ‘Made in Qatar’ internationally and continue our commitment to the highest quality of our products.

Located in Qatar’s industrial area, Coastal’s Sports Seating Factory was established to manufacture stadium seating that will be used at several proposed venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup™. The facility was inaugurated at an event on Wednesday and attended by representatives of major stakeholders that will contribute to the successful delivery of the first tournament in the Middle East, including Qatar Rail, Ashghal, Lusail, Aspire Zone Foundation and Qatar Foundation.

Al Wakrah Stadium: After the 2022 FIFA World Cup™, the stadium will become the new home of Al Wakrah Sports Club, with a reduced capacity of 20,000 guaranteeing an electric atmosphere for their Qatar Stars League matches. The other 20,000 seats will be donated to football development projects overseas

Coastal Qatar are a specialised manufacturing and construction company with more than 30 years of experience. The company delivers local and international services and uses their engineering, galvanizing, steel and manufacturing divisions for projects not just in Qatar but also with global partners in Europe and the United States. Coastal have worked on projects including Hamad International Airport, Qatar Foundation, Ashghal, Aspire Logistics and Qatar Olympic Committee.

State-of-the-art polymer injection molding machinery will be used to manufacture the seating. The process is fully-automated, reducing the risk of health and safety issues, while improving efficiency.

The first seat ‘Made in Qatar’ will be installed in Al Bayt Stadium in December 2017.
