Job Purpose

The R&A (the governing body for Golf) is seeking to fill an exciting permanent post in the Championship Department. Based in St Andrews and reporting to the Assistant Director – Championships Operations, this key role will embrace a wide range of duties surrounding the organisation and planning of the transportation operations.

 

Job Description

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Core responsibilities will be but not limited to:

  • Work with local authorities, the Police and all other agencies to devise and manage a transport plan on an annual basis for The Open
  • Work on upwards of 5 years ahead in planning a transport plan for the event
  • Creating a logistical plan for the build and de-rig of the Championship which involves a site reporting office, routing to the course and a logistical team to manage the process
  • Search, view and review potential car park sites and secure land rentals for up to 5 years ahead of any Open Championship as well as other land use for the event
  • Review tender contracts to support the transport plan from car parking, park and ride operators to Traffic Marshalls
  • Understand and work with the Police and CSAS companies in order to provide Traffic Marshalls for the event which may involve tendering and negotiations
  • Understand the legal and time process of Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders to be implemented for the event
  • Review, purchase and tender for companies to manage stocks, installation and management of no waiting cones
  • Review, tender and work with signage companies to assist with both the logistical and transport group
  • Understand the requirements of vehicle recovery for the Championship to tender and manage accordingly
  • Liaise with the team on how the transport interacts with the venue itself by looking at the spectator experience as well as how people access and egress the event
  • Work closely with the rail industry and other forms of public transport on how they support the Championship and how this fits in with the overall transport plan
  • Work with private suppliers in securing a helipad operation and work with the CAA and the Police in reviewing ATZ’s in and around the course
  • To work with local authorities on developing new entrances and exits to car parks on a temporary or permanent basis
  • Review, tender and manage a dilapidation survey company for the whole of The Open in reviewing all land used before and after the event
  • Liaise with local suppliers for managing the restitution of land use for the event that may be private or publicly owned
  • Look at legacy projects that could assist both the local population and The Open in relations to transportation
  • Work with relevant teams and authorities in creating a communication place for local residents that may involve leaflet and letter drops as well as information boards at all locations
  • Liaise with the current and new suppliers to provide transportation to and from the venue for R&A staff, VIP’s, referees to and from the venue
  • Review with the transport group pick up and drop off locations for Park and Ride buses, Taxi’s, VIP’s, Hospitality, Sponsors and Staff
  • Setting up of logistical plan working with courtesy car operators, securing land acting as their base and cleaning areas
  • Working with existing and new suppliers in providing both vehicle and pedestrian bridges for the event including the logistical build and de-rig
  • To work with the relevant team and suppliers reviewing and improving new roads and pathways to be implemented on a permanent or temporary basis
  • Plan and work with the accommodation partner to create the Accommodation Village involving securing land as well as reviewing how this interacts with the main transport plan considering the effects on the local community
  • Understanding and working with the relevant authorities regarding public right of way closures and rights to roam in Scotland
  • Liaising with existing and new suppliers in providing temporary roadway and spectator trackway to support the event
  • Be part of the contingency group for the event and support this from a transportation aspect

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A degree level qualification in a relevant subject.
  • Strong project management experience with the ability to adapt to changing environments
  • Not a pre-requisite but the ability to produce maps in CAD form
  • Experience of working within teams and independently
  • Proven budget management experience
  • Excellent communications and leadership skills
  • Strong IT proficiency
  • Experience of working within transport operations on a large scale event

  • A willingness to work outside normal working hours when necessary
  • Flexibility to work from championship locations, throughout the UK and overseas, when required
  • A passion for golf and a good working knowledge of the sport preferable
